Two children have been taken to the hospital after they were hit by a car just before 8:00 this morning.

Laurel City Police say it happened in the 900 block of Montrose Avenue.

Police say the children's grandmother had let them out of her car, and told them to cross the street. But a car was coming.

The driver tried to avoid the kids, but could not. The driver stayed on the scene.

Both children are expected to survive

Here's my issue. Just who is haphazard enough to let kids off from a car and tell them to cross the street? That's a windy area there (not blow like wind but wind like corkscrew) with limited visibility. No crosswalks to amount to either. This is the back shortcut to the mall from 198 and it's heavily traveled by the locals. Maybe there's more to the story than they're reporting --- I certainly hope so because otherwise the Grandma needs to be brought up on child endangerment charges.

UPDATE: The kids were 7 and 10. [livejournal.com profile] pyllgrum sent me the NBC4 link:

... this report also says the grandmother said it was OK to cross.
